Abiye’s unmistakable tone of arrogance

Share

The Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, exploited his country’s hosting of the African Union Summit to turn its platform into a propaganda megaphone for his expansionist ambitions in the Horn of Africa.

With an unmistakable tone of arrogance, Abiy Ahmed claimed that for a nation of 130 million people, remaining landlocked is a “constraint on growth,” labeling sovereign access to the sea an “existential necessity.” Observers view this as a diplomatic cover for attempts to violate the sovereignty of neighboring states and threaten regional stability.

The misinformation did not stop at land borders but extended to the water file. He attempted to portray the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as a model for “shared prosperity,” claiming his country manages water resources with “wisdom and responsibility.”

Abiy Ahmed went as far as denying historical and legal facts by asserting that international rivers should be managed according to his unilateral vision, deliberately ignoring the severe damages inflicted on downstream nations and attempting to beautify the policy of “thirsting neighbors for Ethiopian electricity” under the slogans of “African ingenuity” and “shared prosperity.”
