Yemen’s Houthis and the Yemeni Government on Tuesday signed an agreement in Muscat, Oman’s capital, regarding a prisoner exchange described as one of the largest deals the two sides have reached since the war began.

According to the agreement, the Yemeni Government will release 1,700 prisoners affiliated with the Houthis, while the Houthis will release 1,200 prisoners on their side.

Among the prisoners the Houthis are releasing are 7 Saudi nationals and 23 Sudanese nationals.

The total number of prisoners to be exchanged reaches 2,900, and international organizations, led by the ICRC, are expected to play a role in implementing the agreement to ensure the transfer process and care for the released prisoners.

This agreement is seen as a significant step toward building trust, while also potentially boosting efforts to achieve a political solution to Yemen’s long-standing conflict.
