Al-Burhan Seeks Security Cooperation with Washington

Share

Sudan’s army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has initiated secret talks with U.S. security and military officials to revive intelligence and security cooperation, diplomatic sources told Ayin. The discussions, led by intelligence chief Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal in early January, seek to restore ties that were active during the Bashir era.

A diplomatic source said al-Burhan views Washington as a potential partner, signaling readiness to cooperate on counterterrorism in the Red Sea and Horn of Africa, possibly in exchange for U.S. withdrawal from the “Quad” framework.

However, no breakthrough has been reached, as Washington prioritizes ending the war before deepening bilateral cooperation.

Al-Burhan has meanwhile ruled out renewed talks with RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and held separate meetings with British and Egyptian officials in Port Sudan focused on ceasefire efforts, civilian protection, Red Sea security, and humanitarian access.
