The former Director of Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), during an interview with the Geedfadhi forum, spoke about a day he met with the former President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta.

It was during the height of the maritime dispute between Somalia and Kenya.

The Director of Kenya’s Intelligence Service escorted his Somali counterpart to a room in Nairobi where Kenyatta was smoking a cigarette.

Fahad said, “When I walked in, he didn’t even show respect by putting out the cigarette. Before I could even sit down, he started shouting at me, saying, ‘I care about Kenyan law, Kenya will defend its territory, and if necessary, I will intervene in Somalia,’ while being extremely angry and still smoking.”

Fahad stated that he didn’t know exactly what Kenyatta did, but suddenly realized the President had flipped the table between them.

After that, the Kenyan intelligence chief grabbed Fahad by the hand and took him to a restroom to wash off the mess.

While Fahad was washing himself, Uhuru Kenyatta walked in holding a tissue, helped wipe him down, and said to him, “Pole mzee” (Swahili for “Sorry, elder/sir”).

Kenyatta was demanding that Somalia withdraw its maritime dispute case pending before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which Somalia refused to do.

Uhuru then ordered Fahad to leave Kenya, according to Fahad Yasin, once his plane took off and entered Somali airspace, Kenya issued a letter severing diplomatic ties with Somalia.
