MOGADISHU – The Commander of the Banadir Regional Security Division, Macalin Mahdi, on Thursday displayed a large cache of weapons that he said had been seized from forces loyal to opposition presidential candidate Hassan Ali Khaire, following overnight clashes with government troops in Mogadishu.
According to Macalin Mahdi, the fighting began late at night and continued into the morning hours, resulting in the confiscation of weapons and military equipment allegedly used by the armed group. The commander stressed that the government would not tolerate any attempt to destabilize security in the capital.
“No one will be allowed to disrupt the security of Mogadishu,” Macalin Mahdi said, adding that security operations would continue against armed groups challenging state authority.
The commander further warned that government forces would intensify operations against opposition figures and fighters who refuse to comply with security directives.
Macalin Mahdi is widely regarded as one of the most influential security commanders within Somalia’s security apparatus. Supporters credit him with playing a major role in improving security conditions in Mogadishu, particularly during a period when the city faced persistent challenges from assassinations, bomb attacks, organized criminal activity, and youth gangs commonly known as Ciyaal Weero.
Under recent security campaigns, authorities have reported significant reductions in street crime and armed violence across the capital. Government officials frequently cite these improvements as evidence of the effectiveness of ongoing security reforms and law-enforcement operations.
The latest confrontation comes at a politically sensitive moment, raising concerns about the potential impact of political tensions on security and stability in Mogadishu. Analysts note that while security gains have been achieved in recent years, maintaining peace in the capital will require continued dialogue and restraint from all political actors.
Mogadishu remains Somalia’s political and economic center, and any escalation of armed confrontations within the city carries broader implications for national stability and governance.
