Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has, for the first time, confirmed plans for Turkish investors to develop a major new port near Warsheekh, on the outskirts of Mogadishu.
The nearly $4 billion project is expected to include a port, a special economic zone and industrial facilities. The site is also located near the planned location of Somalia’s satellite launch facility.
Prime Minister Hamza said the government has reached an agreement with Turkish investors to develop the project under a public-private partnership model.
He also revealed that Qatari investors have expressed interest in investing in Mogadishu’s airport, although discussions on the proposed investment are still ongoing.
Hamza said construction has also begun on a highway connecting the area to Mogadishu as part of a broader development initiative known as “New Mogadishu,” aimed at expanding the capital and boosting economic activity.
