Somali Regional State released 123, among two journalists.

Ethiopian human rights commission (ESMECO) held a meeting with the regional president in Jigjiga city, In the discussion, ESMECO has presented the findings of the human rights situation in the region through the observations that it has conducted several times and urged them to strengthen the good products and to take action on important issues. ESMECO has proposed that measures should be taken to improve the human rights management and access to justice especially in prisons and police stations and to rectify the prolonged pre-indictive detention situation.

 

Somali Regional Government President Honorable Mustafa Mohammed in the discussion to address the issues of human rights that ESMECO has raised in detail especially to avoid prolonged pre-indictment imprisonment and to implement fast justice system. ESMECO has confirmed that the region has started to take encouraging practical measures. According to this, a total of 121 people who were illegally detained in different police stations in the region have been released and the region is making efforts to solve other human rights issues that need attention. In addition, ESMEKO has confirmed that the region has released 2 journalists who were in prison with pardon.

 

ESMECO chief commissioner Birhanu Adelo has acknowledged the encouraging measures taken by the Somali region in a short period of time and stated that the action should be taken as an example in other regions. Urging the region to intensify its efforts to provide solutions to other critical human rights issues, ESMECO will continue to intensify the monitoring of the regional level of external and consultative ideas to improve the situation of human rights in Ethiopia.
