The U.S. interest includes expanding Danab’s presence with bases in all Somali administrative areas, including Dhuusamareeb, Baydhabo, Jowhar, and Kismaayo, with significant training conducted in Balidoogle. The U.S. views Danab forces as apolitical and crucial for national security against threats like Al-Shabaab.
Puntland, meanwhile, urges a more equitable share of national defense resources and finances, advocating for distinct special units under its administration to be trained by the U.S.Despite the ongoing talks, no final decision has been made, though the U.S. continues its strong interest in Puntland and has an unofficial presence there.
