UNSC endorses AS’s sanctions extension

Share

The UN Security Council unanimously extended the mandate of the panel monitoring sanctions against the terrorist group Al-Shabaab (AS) on Friday.

All 15 members voted in favor, prolonging ship inspections to enforce the arms embargo, charcoal export ban, and IED materials controls until November 30, 2026.

Other measures like travel bans, asset freezes, and the general arms embargo remain in place indefinitely.

Britain’s UN envoy, James Kariuki, stated this decision strengthens efforts to cut off Al-Shabaab’s arms access, disrupt their financing, and bolster Somalia’s government capacity.

The group has fought Somalia for over 16 years, targeting security forces and civilians.

Somalia’s government reports 220 airstrikes since February, killing 868 fighters.

This renewal aligns with ongoing international pressure on Al-Shabaab amid persistent instability in Somalia.

It supports federal efforts to weaken the group’s logistics, especially as they control rural areas and launch attacks in urban centers like Mogadishu.
