Uganda’s opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, known widely as Bobi Wine, claims that the government is planning to rig Uganda’s 2026 elections.
He alleges that his team has “reliable information” indicating that security agencies intend to provoke chaos and impose a curfew before voting — similar to the 2020 unrest.
Wine criticized Electoral Commission (EC) chairperson Simon Byabakama for “silence” on alleged illegalities, urging him to resign if transparency cannot be guaranteed.
Authorities deny the allegations, saying that Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) party has violated campaign rules and endangered public safety in the past. Police, in prior briefings, have accused the NUP of flouting campaign and traffic regulations, including blocking highways with unauthorized convoys, attacking officers, vandalizing police vehicles, and defying agreed rally routes.
The EC has urged candidates to follow guidelines, and said it will address any confirmed breaches by security forces or political actors.
