Al-Shabaab militants launched a heavy overnight attack on a Jubaland military base outside Doolow district in Somalia’s Gedo region, temporarily taking control of the facility before withdrawing early Sunday, according to residents and preliminary local reports.
The base is located along the main road linking Doolow with Beled Hawo, another strategically important town near Somalia’s borders with Kenya and Ethiopia.
Residents said intense fighting erupted after the militants attacked the position late Saturday night using heavy and light weapons. Jubaland forces stationed at the facility reportedly withdrew as the fighting intensified, allowing the attackers to enter and take control of the compound.
This is another terrorists attempt to show off their strength and create scare to the local residents in three angle border region.
Gedo, Somalia’s second largest region borders with Kenya and Ethiopia, on other hand Jubbaland Administration and the Federal Government are in dispute who controls the region.
