Major blow to al-Shabaab: Somali intelligence eliminates top commander in Hiiraan

Share

Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), with support from international partners, announced Wednesday that a senior al-Shabaab commander was killed in a planned operation in the Shaw area of Hiiraan region.

The operation targeted Hussein Abdullahi Dalab, widely known within the group as “Aamir”, who served as al-Shabaab’s militia leader in Hiiraan.

According to the government statement, Aamir had been responsible for orchestrating and carrying out numerous attacks in Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle over the years. He also played a central role in coordinating the group’s supply lines and operations across central and southern Somalia. Authorities described his death as “a heavy blow to al-Shabaab’s command and logistical networks.”

NISA has intensified its operations in recent weeks, focusing on high-profile commanders as part of the federal government’s broader campaign to weaken the al-Qaeda-affiliated group and reclaim territory still under its control
