Rwanda received Over 160 asylum seekers

Share

Over 160 asylum seekers have arrived in Rwanda from Libya, where they had been detained while enroute to Europe.

They were evacuated under the UNHCR-backed emergency transit mechanism.

Most of the 164 asylum seekers are Sudanese, while others were from Eritrea, Ethiopia, and South Sudan.

Rwanda has taken in 2,760 asylum seekers since 2019.

Some 2.500 of them have since been resettled in the US, Canada, and parts of Europe. According to the UNHCR, Libya is an unsafe country for asylum seekers because of years of conflict and political instability, and the absence of any asylum system.
