The United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) will end its mandate on October 31, concluding a two-year transition and more than three decades of UN missions in the country, a UN official said Monday.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said the mission would cease operations in line with Security Council resolutions and a request from Somalia’s federal government.
Somalia’s deputy Prime Minister Salah Jama closes the mission’s mandate at a ceremony held in Mogadishu.
UN operations in Somalia began in 199s when the central government of Somalia collapsed and the country entered civil war.
