The UN Security Council voted today on a draft resolution extending the mandate of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) for another year, until 31 December 2026.
The UK, which leads on the Somalia file, tabled the text after weeks of difficult negotiations and delays caused by disagreements among Council members.
The draft resolution maintains the deployment of 11,826 uniformed personnel, including 680 police, and emphasizes the need for additional international funding and support to help Somali forces combat intensified al-Shabaab attacks.
It also requests continued joint technical assessments by the UN, AU and Somali government to monitor progress toward transferring full security responsibility to Somali forces.
Talks were complicated by divisions over whether the resolution should also address the future of the UN Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS)
the final text reportedly confirms that UNTMIS’ operations will conclude on 31 October 2026 following its transition plan.
the resolution will shape Somalia’s security transition over the next two years amid continued regional and security pressures.
