Forced evictions in Somalias capital, Mogadishu, have led to the destruction of millions of dollars invested in community infrastructure.
Report informs that Jim Robinson, co-coordinator of the Global Housing, Land and Property Area of Responsibility (HLP AoR), said this during WUF13 in Baku.
According to him, about $4.6 million in investments were lost in just one year, including in schools, a medical facility, water supply and sanitation facilities, lighting and other projects. The losses affected not only investments by international donors, but also those made by local communities.
Robinson stressed that these losses could have been avoided by investing small amounts in advance in the verification of property rights and situational analysis.
“This shows the existing contradiction: on the one hand, there is a desire to act quickly, but on the other, there is a real risk of losing the results of these efforts,” the expert noted.
