The Prime Minister Dr Abiy and his Oromo faction came to power following the brief Oromo-led uprisings in Addis Ababa, arguably, it was a series of accidental political circumstances rather than a calculated transition.
Six years into his administration, he appears to lack a coherent, long-term vision for country’s stability and the region.
For the past six years of his rule over 1.5 million people have lost their lives in ongoing conflict, drought and starvation, highest in Africa in recent years.
He currently faces widespread opposition, with armed factions in Tigray, Amhara, and other regions actively challenging his authority.
Thousands of troops were deployed to Tigray, 900km from the capital, effectively becoming trapped there with almost zero chance of return in near future.
Meanwhile, Fano movement has secured significant territory in Amhara region and Fano controls much of Amhara region. Benishangul-Gumuz and Gambella are effectively no go zones and Ethnic clashes continue between Somalis and Oromos in Moyale. Country has zero collection of revenue from those regions.
Believe it or not, Ethiopia is currently enduring a protracted, multifaceted civil war, while diplomatic relations with neighboring countries such as Sudan, Eritrea, Egypt and Somalia have severely deteriorated.
There is growing concern among the regional intellectuals that Dr Abiy’s current policy is positioning the Oromo population as Hutu of Ethiopia in near future, in the Rwandan context a comparison that signals extreme internal polarization, in my fear is influx of refugees in neighboring countries in near future.
Ultimately, the Dr Abiy’s administration seems preoccupied with developing Addis Ababa into copy cat of Dubai and advertising his achievements through social media while the rest of the nation suffers. To be honest with you I see no sustainable future for Dr Abiy’s administration unless right honorable the Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed shifts his policies towards Ethiopia and the region that’s my honest conclusion. God save the people of Ethiopia.
