Uganda and Somalia have reviewed progress in the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), with discussions focusing on the gradual withdrawal of troops and the transfer of security responsibilities to Somali forces.
The discussions took place at the Somali National Army (SNA) 08 Brigade Headquarters in Embresso, Barawe, where UPDF Battle Group 45 Commander, Col. Dr. Justus Musenene, met Somalia’s Chief of Defence Forces, Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud.
The two military leaders also discussed capacity building, training and mentorship programmes aimed at strengthening the operational independence of Somali security forces.
Maj. Gen. Mohamud commended AUSSOM troops for their sacrifice, professionalism and contribution to peace and stability in Somalia. He also praised Uganda’s military leadership for its commitment to Pan-Africanism and strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries.
Col. Musenene welcomed the recognition, describing it as a morale boost for the troops, and urged Somali forces to consolidate gains achieved through joint operations.
The meeting also reviewed operational progress and ideological orientation programmes.
AUSSOM is supporting Somali security forces as they gradually assume greater responsibility for the country’s security, following the transition from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
The meeting was attended by Maj. Daudi Okema, Maj. David Akandwanaho, Maj. Francis Odede, Maj. Fred Emuron and senior SNA officers.
