Al-Shabaab releases video featuring Oleynik Aleksandr, a Ukrainian national and captain of a UN helicopter.
The helicopter is said to have made an emergency landing in an area controlled by Al-Shabaab in January 2024 near El Bur, in the Wisil area.
Since then, the pilot and other crew members on board the aircraft have been in the group’s captivity.
In the released video, Oleynik Aleksandr appeals to the Ukrainian government and the United Nations to engage in negotiations for his release and that of the other crew members.
Additionally, the pilot has issued a plea to the President of Ukraine and the UN Secretary-General, urging them not to overlook his situation and to prioritize efforts to secure their freedom.
