China, Zambia, and Tanzania have signed a landmark $1.4 billion deal to revive the historic Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) line.

The 1,860-kilometer railway—originally built by China in the 1970s to support copper exports and fuel imports—will undergo major upgrades, including station rehabilitation, new tracks, tunnels, bridges, and related infrastructure.

The agreement, signed in Lusaka, aims to boost freight capacity from 100,000 tons to 2.4 million tons annually.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema said the TAZARA corridor is essential to transforming Africa’s second-largest copper producer into a regional transport and logistics hub, driving trade, investment, and job creation.
