The South Ethiopia Regional Health Bureau has announced that a 15-year-old girl who was receiving treatment for Marburg virus disease has fully recovered and been discharged from a medical center.
In a statement issued on its social media page yesterday, 30 November 2025, the Bureau said the patient, identified as Beamlak Mitku, had been under medical follow-up after the virus was detected in her system.
The Head of the Regional Health Bureau, Endeshaw Shibru, said the girl had been receiving treatment after showing symptoms of Marburg virus disease and was released from the medical center after a laboratory test confirmed she was free of the virus.
Including the 15-year-old, three people have so far recovered from Marburg virus disease following treatment, according to the Bureau. Health officials stressed that individuals who seek care at health institutions as soon as symptoms appear have a higher chance of recovery.
Data from the Ministry of Health indicated that no new infections were detected in laboratory tests conducted on 140 people yesterday, 30 November 2025.
Since the virus was first detected in Jinka city, Marburg virus has been confirmed in 12 people out of a total of 488 laboratory tests conducted, while eight people have died from the disease. One person is currently receiving medical treatment.
Over the weekend, it was reported that authorities in the Ari Zone of the South Ethiopia Region imposed a one-week lockdown on movement to and from the area where the Marburg outbreak has been confirmed, in a bid to curb further spread of the disease.
The Ari Zone Marburg Disease Control Transport Sector Committee announced that all cross-country transport services entering or leaving the zone will be suspended for one week starting 29 November 2025, while transport within the zone remains permitted for the time being.
