Garissa and Mwingi Road closed after Bus attack

Share

Transport operations along the Garissa-Mwingi Highway were disrupted on Tuesday evening after suspected attackers ambushed a passenger bus near Ukasi, leaving several people feared injured.

Witnesses said the bus was travelling between Garissa and Mwingi when it came under attack. Videos from the scene showed the vehicle speeding away as stones smashed its windscreen.

The incident triggered panic among travellers, forcing several buses and other vehicles to halt their journeys mid-route over safety fears.

Reports indicated passengers and drivers refused to proceed until authorities guaranteed their security amid rising tension between rival communities in the area.

Earlier in the day, residents claimed two people, including a minor, had been killed by unknown assailants, prompting angry protests at Ukasi Market. Images from the scene showed burning tyres blocking the highway.

The latest violence comes just days after seven residents were killed in Tseikuru in what police described as retaliatory attacks linked to ongoing clashes involving locals and a pastoralist community.

Authorities had not issued an official statement by publication time.
