Ugandan Government has announced that it will pull out its troops from Somalia by August next year.
General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces, announced Uganda will pull all UPDF troops from Somalia by August 1, 2027 Uganda currently has around 4,500 troops under AUSSOM and roughly 2,000 more under a separate bilateral deal with Mogadishu.
The announcement raises fresh questions about AUSSOM’s capacity as the mission already shrank from over 22,000 to about 12,000 troops in 2025 .
Uganda was the first country to deploy troops to Somalia under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), sending soldiers in March 2007.
