A renewed piracy threat has emerged off Yemen and Somalia after two commercial vessels carrying a total of 22 Indian nationals were hijacked in separate incidents.
The M.T. Sibu 1, carrying 16 Indians, was seized by armed pirates in the Gulf of Aden, while the M/V LUTUF, carrying six Indians, was hijacked off Somalia’s Puntland coast.
While the Sibu 1 crew was reported safe, the status of the LUTUF and its crew remains unclear.
The incidents highlight continuing security risks for commercial shipping across the Horn of Africa.
