Russia agrees not to recruit Kenyans to fight in Ukraine

Share

Kenya says Russia has agreed to stop accepting Kenyan nationals into its military after concerns that hundreds had been drawn into the war in Ukraine.

Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Minister made the announcement in Moscow following talks with his Russian counterpart, saying Kenyans will no longer be able to enlist in the Russian armed forces.

The issue has raised alarm in Kenya amid reports that some citizens traveled abroad expecting civilian jobs but were instead recruited into military roles linked to the conflict.

The Kenyan government says it has been dismantling recruitment networks and has shut down more than 600 agencies accused of sending job seekers overseas under false pretenses.
