Somali National Army troops are undergoing joint military training with Turkish forces in Türkiye, where the newly deployed Somali unit is receiving specialized instruction in parachute operations. The training marks another step in the expanding defence partnership between Somalia and Türkiye, with a focus on developing highly trained and professionally capable Somali forces.
The programme is part of Türkiye’s broader effort to strengthen and modernize Somalia’s military capabilities through specialized training, modern doctrine and operational skills. Türkiye has trained thousands of Somali soldiers through the TURKSOM military academy, including elite Gorgor units, as part of its long-term security cooperation with Somalia.
The parachute training adds another advanced capability to Somalia’s growing military training programmes, giving Somali troops experience in airborne operations and expanding the range of missions they can potentially undertake.
It also highlights the increasingly sophisticated nature of Türkiye-Somalia military cooperation, as Ankara continues to support the professionalization and modernization of the Somali National Army.
