The Trump administration has terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals of Somalia, South Sudan, Cameroon, and Ethiopia living in the United States.
USCIS confirmed that Somalia’s designation ended on August 14, 2026, and South Sudan’s on August 7, 2026, following determinations by former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem that the countries no longer met the statutory conditions.
TPS allows eligible nationals from designated countries to remain and work legally during crises. Ethiopia’s termination is currently stayed by a federal judge, TPS does not lead to permanent residency.
Full list of countries whose TPS status has been terminated:
Haiti, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan, Cameroon, Nepal, Honduras, Nicaragua, Venezuela, South Sudan, Myanmar, Somalia
With TPS terminated for these countries, the question is how affected nationals will navigate their status and whether legal challenges will restore protection.
