The Federal Republic of Somalia has officially assumed the Presidency of the UN Security Council for January 2026.
This historic milestone highlights Somalia’s rising diplomatic influence and leadership on the global stage again.
Slovenia who was the UNSC president for the month of December handed over to Somalia as the new UNSC president for the month of January 2026.
UK will takeover from Somalia in February and US will assume the UNSC presidency from UK for the month of March.
It’s not the first time Somalia leads the UNSC,in 1971 Somalia was president of the UNSC.
Somalia’s current UNSC presidency came as its in diplomatic fallout with Israel which illegally announced recognition of Somalia’s Northwest state region.
