Somalia has taken a significant step toward the recovery of civil aviation by reaching an agreement with IATA to restore its Billing and Settlement Plan (BSP) country code, marking a historic development after a 33-year suspension was lifted.
The BSP, which is the global system IATA uses to facilitate and secure financial transactions between travel agencies and airlines, has been absent from Somalia since the collapse of the central government. Its absence made it difficult to efficiently track, record, and manage airline ticket sales within the country.
The Minister of Transport and Aviation stated that IATA is now ready to restore Somalia’s BSP country code, describing it as “a crucial step that fully integrates Somalia into the global aviation community.”
The Federal Government of Somalia emphasizes that the return of the BSP code will strengthen the country’s efforts to rebuild aviation institutions, opening the door to new partnerships, increased trust, and modernization aimed at an aviation market that fully aligns with IATA standards.
