Somalia to go 1p1v Federal elections next year

Share

The Somali government has announced that next year it will  conduct one person one vote federal elections as political stalemate still persists.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has said that the government is working to ensure Somalia holds a federal-level, one-person, one-vote election next year, in accordance with the country’s Constitution.

The government has already conducted one-person, one-vote elections in the South West, Galmudug and Hirshabelle regional states as part of its efforts to expand direct voting across the country.

However, opposition groups have rejected the government’s electoral approach and called for an election based on a political agreement reached through consultations between the government and opposition stakeholders.
