The Somali Navy is joining a maritime exercise led by the United States government, specifically AFRICOM Command, which will include countries such as Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, France, Georgia, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Senegal, Seychelles, Tanzania, Tunisia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
This exercise, set to take place in the Indian Ocean, marks the first time the Somali Navy has participated since the civil war.
Recently, the AFRICOM commander stated that armed groups operating in Somalia cannot be defeated by airstrikes alone; instead, the U.S. must support the navies of countries including Somalia.
