President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan SheikhMohamud, has stated that Somalia went through a period where a Somali person receiving zakat (almsgiving) was rare, and therefore, Muslim people abroad were given zakat instead.

“Today, the governments to which we used to give zakat are now the ones giving us zakat,” he added.

He acknowledged that while there is need in Somalia today, the government is unable to fully address it.”It is true that there is need in the country today, but the government is not sufficient and cannot manage it,” said Hassan Sheikh

He was responding to remarks made the previous night by former President Farmaajo, who said there is significant need in the country and that the government should increase salaries for the military and civil servants.
