Senior Oromia regional force commander among over 100 security personnel killed in renewed Oromia–Somali border fighting as more than 43,000 civilians flee

Heavy fighting continued on November 1st, 2026, between Oromia Regional Special Forces, Gada Commando and Gachana Sirna militias on one side, and Somali Regional Special Forces and allied militias on the other.

The clashes spread across Moyale Town, Hudet Woreda, Chamuk and Melab in the disputed Oromia–Somali border area of Dawa Zone.

Reports from the area indicate that more than 100 security personnel from both sides were killed during the sustained fighting, including over 47 Oromia regional forces and a senior operational commander. Somali regional forces also sustained significant casualties, although the exact number remains undetermined.

The fighting has caused extensive civilian displacement and destruction, with approximately 12–13 villages suffering damage from fires and armed engagements. More than 43,000 civilians have reportedly fled their homes, many crossing into northern Kenya in search of safety.

Meanwhile, the Somali Regional State rejected a federal directive ordering both regional special forces to withdraw from Moyale Town, citing distrust of federal security forces and their relationship with Oromia regional authorities.
