Uganda demands $1B compensation for its peace mission in Somalia from Türkiye

Share

Uganda’s military chief General Muhoozi Kainerugaba has ordered a major protest to be held at the Turkish Embassy in Kampala on September 1, demanding that Turkey extradite Ugandan blogger and government critic Fred Lumbuye, who is based in the country.

The planned demonstration comes amid a deepening diplomatic feud between Uganda and Turkey.

Muhoozi has separately demanded $1 billion in compensation for Uganda’s peacekeeping role in Somalia and has called for the cancellation of a Turkish contract linked to the Standard Gauge Railway project.

The demonstration was initially planned for June before being postponed.

The central question now is whether Turkey will yield to the pressure — or whether the standoff deepens an already fragile bilateral relationship.
